Goodwood Festival of Speed – The Silver Jubilee

One of the UK’s premier motorsports events, the Goodwood Festival of Speed, celebrates the history of motorsports during its silver jubilee this July. Charter a private jet to Southampton, England, to be a part of this iconic event.

How it began

The Festival of Speed was founded by the Duke of Richmond (formerly Lord March) in 1993 to bring motor racing back to Chichester, a region steeped in British motor racing history. The event’s inaugural race on June 13, 1993, had an unprecedented turnout of 25,000 people, who descended on Goodwood’s grounds for an action-packed day. The huge crowds meant that the following year, a Saturday race was added to the original Sunday event. Two years later, in 1996, Richmond added a Friday race to the calendar, transforming the festival into a three-day extravaganza. In 2010, the Moving Motor show was added on the Thursday.

Today, Goodwood draws in crowds of 100,000 people on each day of the festival. One of the main attractions is the chance to see motorcycles, helicopters, planes and race cars up-close and in action. Another is the festival’s famous hillclimb, which tests motorsport drivers and their vehicles to the limit with an elevation of 92.7 metres and an average gradient of 4.9%. Nick Heidfeld holds the current world record for climbing the hill, which he achieved in 41.6 seconds in a McLaren MP4/13 Formula One car in 1999.

The 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed is one of the few events in the world where the greatest heritage cars and newest motor vehicles compete side-by-side. The Duke of Richmond will draw on and celebrate the festival’s 25 most memorable moments for the silver jubilee. This will involve Goodwood’s racing teams, car manufacturers and drivers, all of whom helped shape the event into what it is today.
